Indo-Pakistani War of and Kashmir conflict Immediately after independence, tensions between India and Pakistan began to boil over, and the first of three full-scale wars between the two nations broke out over the then princely state of Kashmir. The Maharaja of Kashmir wanted to have a standstill position. He signed the Instrument of Accession to India on 26 October Indian troops were airlifted to Srinagar from 27 October dawn onwards. An intense war was waged across the state and former comrades found themselves fighting each other. Pakistan suffered significant losses. A number of UN resolutions 38—47 were passed calling for a plebiscite to be held in Kashmir to determine accession to India or Pakistan only after Pakistan withdrew its army from Kashmir.

July 5, Leave a comment By: I had been going around the last month to say goodbye to different families and community members, but the last day was the hardest because I had to officially say goodbye to my host family. I lived with them for the whole two years of my service, which is unusual for a Peace Corps Volunteer in Paraguay. Over those two years, I was closer to them than even my own family at times because they experienced the inevitable highs and lows with me during my service.
My host mother and I, my last day in site. The person I grew the closest to during my service was my host sister.
However, the sense of optimism was short-lived since in mid Pakistani paramilitary forces and Kashmiri insurgents captured the deserted, but strategic, Himalayan heights in the Kargil district of India.
On a muggy Saturday afternoon about to resolve itself in thunder and lightning, Joel Berg sits on the sweating pavement beside the Q Street Metro entrance. He hasn’t had to give back a buck yet. Oblivious to passersby standing over him — a stocky bicyclist, a weaving drunk, a couple in starchy suburban weekend wear, a guy in a white T-shirt with Jack Kerouac’s likeness on it — Berg cranks the return lever hard enough to shake the red plastic milk crate on which the Royal sits.
When her family was in town last week, Lopez, a receptionist for Sen. Saturdays, he dons shorts, straw hat and running shoes and turns bard, setting up shop beside D. Fire Department standpipe M. The usual turnaround is three minutes, plus whatever time you spend describing the person for whom the poem is intended. This day speed is of particular essence.
However, his tour was far from the norm as he headed the Group in both the Royal Engineers and the Royal Logistic Corps. This included responsibility for the operation of one ninth of Royal Mail — plus the added difficulty of severe industrial relations issues in a couple of his areas. Ken did not shy away from the task of taking the Group from the comfort and support of Mill Hill and its postal empathy to the unknown that was Grantham, and being part of a very large TA organisation.
At the same time he had to downsize the Group, from four to three Regiments and take manning from 75 officers and soldiers to 55 and around — and improve military skills! So the change of Corps and size were not exactly popular with anyone in the Group.
The merchant marine said since the dots and dashes are sent without breaks one after the other they could just as easily mean VTB, but the letters ‘SOS’ were chosen because together there was a certain memorable ring to it.
My Life as a Sexpat. They would tell me that if I wanted to live here I would need a Khmer man and that children of a white woman and a Khmer man are particularly beautiful. Well, now I have a Khmer boyfriend. While Sambath and I were planning his visit to my village in Svay Rieng, I worried about how people in my town and in the provincial town would think of us and talk about us.
Still, they managed to get under my skin a bit. Surprisingly, though, it was not the people in my small, conservative province who caused both of us unease. It was the people in Phnom Penh. Several times Sambath would turn to me and asked me if I understood what was just said. A few times he refused to translate. The comments that he did tell me about were a small group of men calling him a dog following around a group of foreigners and a motorbike driver encouraging him to take advantage of my wealth.
And I never thought that I would be viewed as one of them. I asked Sambath about it, if most people would think that I, an overweight girl with no style in dress, had bought this handsome guy to be my companion. He confirmed that perhaps a few of them thought that way but that the only thing that mattered was how we thought about ourselves and the reality of our situation. But how do I ignore the stares of disdain and the comments of derision directed at me by the Cambodian people?

When I try to talk to the nuns about this, they scoff at me and say that I’m going to raise a weak man, but I am more afraid of creating a man who suppresses his own emotions and bottles everything up and can’t talk about it.

Yes, I dragged Cam to a party last night. Well, it was a small gathering anyway, and really not a party, but more of an informal informational session with food. The rest were potential future Peace Corps volunteers. I served as a volunteer in Mauritania and Zambia. I worked in agriculture, health, and education. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

When people conjure up thoughts related to the life of the Buddha, after Enlightenment, usually India and the vast southern reaches of the Himalayas where he lived and taught comes to mind. When they think of Buddhism, most people turn their thoughts to China. With Zen, typically Japan with credit going to China from which it sprang. However, although it is not exclusively Buddhist, there is a broad band of Buddhism beyond those three countries that forms a huge crescent-like swath from India through southeast Asia, passing through Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
Within that crescent-like swath are hundreds of Buddhist and Zen Buddhist monasteries with thousands of monks, many of which amongst their ranks of thousands have been found to be protesting government policies in Burma, while in the early-mid s they were burning themselves alive in protests over government policies in Vietnam. For the area below the mountains, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, although memories are fading strongly into the past, there still remains a strong lingering association with the Vietnam war with all of its in-country death and destruction, matched, albeit unevenly, only by the social unrest and upheaval throughout America and around the world.
However, the war cast a much different net than exclusively in-country fighting or anti-war demonstrations abroad.
